About New Horizons Professional Support Services Inc.

New Horizons

In 1982,  New Horizons Professional Support Services Incorporated was formed to be the first private contractor in the closing of Tranquille, one of British Columbia's major institutions. NHPSS's principles of normalization and applied behaviour analysis played a vital role in the successful transition to community living, and helped to establish BC's protocol for the deinstitutionalization of Woodlands and Glendale.

NHPSS develops resources, trains community care workers; establishes and designs day programs, support services, and community integration opportunities. We offer individualized services toward the goal of independent and productive living and working in the community. These services include, but are not limited to: Counselling, Training, Screening & Eligibility, Consultation/Therapy, Intensive Support Intervention, and Testing. Specific information about our services can be found under the "Services" heading in the menu or sidebar.

Our philosophy is that a person experiencing disability is entitled to live his or her life with the full dignity of a developing human being, as a self-reliant and productive member of society. NHPSS philosophy is based on the promotion of the individual rights regardless of age or disability and adheres strictly to nonaversive treatment technologies. We are committed to providing the most advanced and highest possible quality services in support of people with challenges to community inclusion.

Consulting with government care services, we developed best practice guidelines for use of behaviour management within the "least restrictive" treatment model. This involves supervising and training positive behavioural support plans to enable individuals with extreme challenging behaviours to live safely and productively in community settings. NHPSS is a recognized source for consultation and training in the areas of positive, person-centered behavioural support, crisis prevention and promoting non-restrictive practice.

Our goal is to assure the best quality of life possible for the people we serve.

Referral for service can be made for any person considered eligible for Community Living BC Services (Kamloops/ Salmon Arm/ Vernon areas) by a CLBC representative.
